The heart of St. Pauli beats at Schmidts Tivoli on Spielbudenplatz: guests come from all over Germany to experience great musical theatre productions with imaginative sets, wacky revues, comedy stars and concerts in one of the city’s most beautiful theatres. Since its opening on 1 September 1991, Schmidts Tivoli has been able to seat 612 spectators every evening.
Schmidts Tivoli is the leading theatre where German-language musicals are produced entirely in-house from the first to the last note, from the initial idea to the premiere. The opening production “Carmen” with Marlene Jaschke in the title role was followed by hits such as “Im weißen Rössl”, musical revues such as “Oscar”, “Fifty Fifty” and “Sixty Sixty”, musicals such as “Cabaret” in a highly acclaimed production by theatre manager Corny Littmann, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Swinging St. Pauli”, which has been performed in numerous city theatres, but also toured nationwide with musical legend Helmut Baumann as director and leading actor at the Theater am Kurfürstendamm.
The theatre became known throughout Germany through the live TV broadcasts of the legendary “Schmidt Mitternachtsshow” in the early 1990s in the third programmes. Since its premiere in September 2003, “Heiße Ecke” – Das St. Pauli Musical has become a real long-running hit: With over 20 years of ensuite performances, the in-house production is the most successful German-language musical.Since its premiere in 2018, “The Christmas Bakery” with songs by Rolf Zuckowski has quickly become a classic during the Advent season. And since October 2021, “The Mindful Tiger” has also been a regular visitor to Spielbudenplatz.
