Capa-Haus
Capa-Haus
The Capa-House is one of the most important memorials in Leipzig to National Socialism and the Second World War, but also to the resistance and liberation in 1945.
In April 1945, Robert Capa came to Leipzig with the Allies as a US war photographer. His world-famous photo series »Last Man to Die« was created at Jahnallee 61 (today Capa-Haus), documenting the last battles in the course of the liberation of Leipzig by US troops and the death of soldier Raymond J. Bowman on April 18, 1945. This series of photos and how they came about are the focus of the historical permanent exhibition »War is Over«.
After decades of decay, the historic building was rediscovered by a civic initiative and saved in cooperation with the municipality, volunteer supporters, museum experts and history-conscious real estate developers. Today, the »Capa-House«, a place of remembrance, belonging to the Leipzig City History Museum is located here, a lively and open space for exhibitions, events and meetings, which is not only dedicated to Robert Capa, but also to his partner, the (war) photographer Gerda Taro, who died in 1937.
The permanent exhibition »War is Over« is accessible free of charge during opening hours. Guided tours can be booked by prior arrangement.
The approximately 70 square meter »Gerda Taro Lounge« in the style of a coffee house offers space for 60 people and for different event formats such as exhibitions, lectures, panel discussions, talks, readings, film screenings, presentations, workshops etc.
