Welcome to Münchner Volkstheater – a theatre characterised by a young ensemble, young directors and an equally young audience. Come by one of our three stages to see classic and modern plays with exciting aesthetics and new perspectives, as well as concerts, readings and other extras. As traditional as the term Volkstheater (folk theatre) sounds, our history is still a rather young one. In 1983, the Münchner Volkstheater at Stiglmaierplatz was opened by the city of Munich. In 2012, 29 years later, it became apparent that the theatre building was bursting at the seams. Therefore, the Munich city council decided to build a new theatre building which opened in October 2021 in the Munich Schlachthofviertel district. Our current home at Tumblingerstraße 29 is one of the most modern theatres in Europe, making us not only famous for great shows but also for great architecture. Since 2005, Münchner Volkstheater has been hosting the “Radikal Jung” theatre festival annually to promote young directors and their works. For two weeks award-winning performances by young talents from the entire German-speaking theatre world are presented on our stages! Visit Münchner Volkstheater: the people’s theatre!
